Maoist leader killed, four held in Chhattisgarh

Chhattisgarh police Monday gunned down a deputy commander of the outlawed Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) and arrested four of his colleagues, officials said.

‘We raided a CPI-Maoist hideout in a hilly area under Bhansi locality in Dantewada district and shot dead a deputy commander and arrested four of his colleagues including a minor boy,’ Superintendent of Police Amresh Mishra told reporters at the district headquarters in Dantewada, some 380 km south of capital Raipur.

Police have recovered some arms from the arrested militants.Forested interiors of Dantewada district along with Bastar, Narayanpur, Bijapur and Kanker that form the 40,000 sq km Bastar region are known to be Maoist stronghold since late 1980s.Three Maoist rebels held in Orissa

Three Maoist rebels held in Orissa

Three Maoist rebels were arrested in Orissa Monday in two separate incidents, police said.’Mala Madakami, who claims to be the area commander of Vansadhara division of the outlawed Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist), was arrested during a combing operation by police in the southern district of Malkangiri,’ a police officer said.

Madakami was involved in several crimes including the murder of a local leader.In another incident, two other Maoists were arrested inside the Similipal biosphere reserve in Mayurbhanj district.The two Maoists have been identified as Sushil Sayan and Pawal Hembram. They were involved in dozens of crimes in the district of Jajpur, Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj, he said.Maoists are active in more than half of the state’s 30 districts.
