San Francisco: Aug 13 Protest against the Indian Government’s “Operation Green Hunt”

Posted by Admin on August 12, 2010

Where: Indian Consulate in San Francisco

(540 Arguello Boulevard)

When: 11 am, August 13 2010

The Government of India has launched a domestic war named Operation Green Hunt in the forested regions of East-Central India, stretching from the states of Chhattisgarh to Jharkhand and West Bengal. This region is home to significant amounts of natural resources.

Big corporations, both Indian and foreign, are plundering these natural resources for quick profits and plan to continue doing so while paying almost no attention to the enormous environmental and human costs inherent in their ventures. The state and central governments continue to welcome these big corporations with open arms by signing an unknown number of memoranda of understanding with them-whose details have been kept secret. A recent report by the Ministry of Rural Development, on the other hand, described these trends as one of the biggest land grabs since the time of Columbus.

This forested region, rich in natural resources as it is, is also home to a large section of India’s roughly 100 million Adivasis (i.e., the tribal population). Using all means at their disposal, the Adivasis resisted the government’s efforts to forcibly drive them from their ancestral lands. Drawing on the Fifth Schedule of the Indian Constitution, which is devoted to Adivasi rights and provisions for their protection, Adivasi activists challenged the government’s expropriations.

Instead of addressing the genuine grievances of the Adivasis, the Indian government has cracked down on their legitimate protests in violation of the letter and intent of the Indian Constitution. Peaceful resistance movements across this region have been met with police brutality and military might; this forced the arming of a section of the resistance movement. State-assisted vigilante groups like the Salwa Judum in Chhattisgarh and Harmad Bahini in West Bengal were a response of the state to the armed resistance of the Adivasis.

When that failed, Operation Green Hunt-a further escalation and militarization of the State’s response-emerged.

We, a group of concerned individuals, urge you to join us in this protest.

Oppose the biggest land grab since Columbus!

Oppose Operation Green Hunt!

Oppose the war on people!

This is all propaganda. Maoists are bloody terrorists who are losing support day by day. The adivasis you fool themselves take up arms against you in Salwa Judum. Nation building is a difficult task. Those seeking cheap popularity always find it easy to point fingers. All economic decisions profit some and harm some other section. Government always pays compensation to people who are displaced. Also, such problems are worse in “fully Maoist” China, with over 1600 protests a week (Chinese government data. Baidu it). But I don’t see any article regarding that here. Your purpose isn’t helping the poor. Its destabilizing India.

And who stopped you from contesting elections? What have the Maoists in particular, and communists in general ever done for this nation? Stopped factories from being built? Armed people? Killed thousands of innocents?

The forces are going to fight you when they find you; thats their job. But unlike you, they don’t bomb trains or collect extortion money.

        ‘Stopped factories from being built?’

        Mr. Goswami,

How would you like it, if coercive armed forces took your home and food and water and clothes with a crummy tarp for cover thrown your way for compensation in favor of a Reliance Corporation call center at the location. Would you say ‘Government you take care of Reliance and its employees, my family and I are OK homeless, hungry, thirsty and naked, and thank you for the tarp to sleep under’ or would you want to take up arms if peaceful resistance falls on deaf ears?

It is all very well for the upscale urbanite sitting pretty to take on the cavalier stances of ‘All economic decisions profit some and harm some other section.’ as long as the harm is to some other section that are invariably the most vulnerable and susceptible to exploitation. How about you guys willingly give up and expropriate that belongs to you to the relatively poorer or in an analogous situation to Green Hunt to the relatively much wealthier for their economic ‘development’ – There is a difference between Nation Building and sticking it to the vast majority of the nation for GDP numbers to create a fictitious perception of building the nation. A nation is its people – all its people, and its cultural and natural resources. Folks willing and ready to mortgage it all to bunch of corporates ready to plunder and leave when the well dries up for at best short term advantage to self should not be talking about Nation Building. You have no idea what the term even means.

Also, FYI, people living at subsistence level like the 100 million tribals are not rolling in corporate or criminal enterprise money to have access to resources to contest and win elections like your typical ‘eat their own young alive’ politician. So how about getting off your behind from the comfort of your environs absorbing media propaganda to actually go to a tribal area or settlement in the heart of India and see the reality of conditions and at least try to understand the entirety of the issues involved before shooting your mouth off in a careless fashion.

Another brainwashed Indian spectator who has no clue because Indian Media fed him the cool-aid that how India is going to be a Super Power and how there are so many rich in India because of their ingenuity. Wake up and smell the Coffee Mr.Goswami, I am not a communist on the contrary I am libertarian but I have to say, this where the State overrides the Personal freedoms. In US the citizens have right to bear firearms and form militias for this specific reason, to fight the state atrocities, when there are excesses.

Police have become the private army of the Corporations who can bribe the “expensive facade” of Indian democracy, where an MLA candidate had to spend up to Rs25Crore (in AP). You and I have no chance, God must be really smiling if the police accept your FIR especially in the rural areas and you are poor.

Lets not pretend every thing in hunky dory in India.

      Shame .. Shame.

    Dear Shivanshu Goswami

Think deeper. If your family were residing on a land, in a house for uncountable generations and somebody wanted to burn your houses since they had discovered baxite under your place, would you have risen up or act passive and keep on “voting” on evil or lesser evils?

Please think deepr. This green hunting is not merely an anti Maoist movement.

Maoists were not the ones to inject ideology into brains of native people of Lalgrah and Nandigram. And this is just the begining too. 70 percent of the country’s population ought not be ruled by a marginal elite of the other 30 percent. They need their own water system, their factories and so forth.

If you found anybody better than Maoists to bring such resolutionas and helps, in organizing and building wells for the Adivasis and other opppressed, let me know. I’ll read and tell you if you are right on that. But if not, join us, before it is too late for you and, your kind.
