Rally In Kolkata Against State Repression in Lalgarh

Posted by Admin on August 29, 2009

Source: Red Barricade

For more than three week, Red Barricade has not been able to report on Lalgarh. Meanwhile as state repression is showing its brutal faces, like destruction of health centres constructed and run by People’s Committee Against Police Atrocities (PCAPA), abduction of two supporters of PCAPA, who were going to Lalgarh with medical help and medicines, people’s resistance is taking more concrete shape. Disobeying section 144 in the Indian Penal code, people of Lalgarh under the banner of PCAPA in regular basis organizes mass rally. Huge participation of people in those rallies proves that the people of Lalgarh demand immediate withdrawal of combined armed forces from Lalgarh and stop the ongoing state repression.

In support of the popular demands of PCAPA and to stop the state repression in Jungalmahal including Lalgarh, today (29 August, 2009) a rally was organized by Lalgarh Mancha (Lalgarh Forum) in Kolkata. Starting from College Square it ended at Esplanade passing through M. G. Road, A. J. C. Bose Road and S. N. Banerjee Rad. People from different strata of the society including workers, students and intellectuals have taken the streets in demand of immediate withdrawal of combined armed forces from Lalgarh. Slogans were shouted demanding immediate and unconditional release of all political prisoners and abolition of Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA). In the rally participation of workers and All Santhals Students Association (ASSA), a students organization of Santhals (a tribal students organization) was note-worthy. Sanhati Udyoug, IFTU, Gana Pratirodh Mancha (W.B.) also participated.

Chengara: A photo essay

Excerpts from Sudeep’s Blog (Backdrop)

[The news from Chengara (ചെങ്ങറ) is depressing. Women are being abducted and raped, men kidnapped, in addition to over two weeks of cutting off food and other lifeline supplies to people who have been protesting peacefully for more than an year now.]

Armed with a lot of gumption and confident that i would be able to fare better than others at my tryst with tyranny, i set on my mission- to Capture Chengara and the lives of thousands who are stranded in the settlement with the no supplies and no government help.

32 day old samaraja was born amidst calamity, her mother looks after her with the supplies that manage to reach her, Sarun her elder brother is malnourished and has health problems.

[Over 5000 families of landless Dalits, Adivasis and other marginalised people started this protest on 4th August 2007 claiming 6000 acres of land (you read that right — six thousand acres) that is illegally kept by Harrison Malayalam Private Ltd in Pathanamthitta district, Kerala. Around 24,000 people from different parts of the region have moved to this area, with tents with poles and plastic sheets. ]

A year long protest has left Ambika (60) and Sarojini tired.

George (58) has a bad heart which is failing his body..he wants to live a better life but first needs some medicines.

Panchami (60) was begging for a bit of rice when my lens fell upon her.

Chicken pox has left her scarred Nimmi (11), it could have killed her, thanks to the traditional Neem therapy.

Mani (55) is an asthama patient, with agrrevated breathing problems, his life is a misery these days. When he is caught unawares by a bout of asthamatic attack, he frantically looks for his friend who has an inhaler from which he is allowed a small share.
Almost 20 women who had camped at 4th counter of the protest grounds. The women have various diseases like fever, chickenpox etc… Availability of food is their main concern.

‘Lalgarh must be a liberated zone for tribals’

Chatradhar Mahato, convenor of the People’s Committee Against Police Atrocities, told rediff.com on Friday that PCAPA was ready for talks with the state government. “However, if the government resorts to violence, we will put up an equal if not a stronger opposition.”In an interview to rediff.com on Thursday, Gour Chakraborty, the CPI-Maoist’s spokesman put forth the Maoists’ demand for Lalgarh.

“We want the entire Lalgarh to be a liberated zone for the tribals. We want them to have a democracy of their own, a democracy that will be guided by a new and free economy,” Chakraborty said.

Lalgarh demands Maoist amnesty

– Drop all cases since 1998, says leader

OUR BUREAU

April 19: The tribals of Lalgarh want the government to drop all cases against suspected Maoists since 1998 as a condition for allowing police into their area for 12 hours on election day.

That is not all, though. They also want former West Midnapore superintendent of police Rajesh Singh to go to Dalilpurchak in the heart of Lalgarh and apologise for “atrocities” in the wake of the mine blast on the chief minister’s route last November and stop “atrocities on tribal women in the name of raids”.https://i0.wp.com/www.telegraphindia.com/1081114/images/14zzlalbig.jpg

After a meeting yesterday, the People’s Committee Against Police Atrocities had mentioned the demand for the former district police chief’s apology but not what is potentially the killer clause: dropping cases. Read the rest of this entry »
