RANCHI: Suspected Maoists on Saturday set two mini-trucks carrying vegetables on fire at Patamda in East Singhbhum district on the Jharkhand-Bengal border for “violation” of the two-day bandh call given by the rebels against price rise.

The Maoists also deflated tyres of some autorickshaws plying on the road and opened fire in the air as a  warning to others.

The Maoist called a two-day Jharkhand bandh beginning Thursday midnight to protest against the skyrocketing price of essential commodities, including vegetables.

Sources said in the wee hours of Friday, when the mini-trucks were on their way to Jamshepdur, about 20 armed Maoists stopped the vehicles and asked the drivers and helpers to alight. The vehicles were then set on fire in which one of the mini-trucks was badly damaged and the other was burnt partially. Read the rest of this entry »

Wanted chief of People’s Committee against Police Atrocities, Chhatradhar Mahato, called the bandh to protest against “police atrocities on innocent people” for the past few months.

Life came to a standstill in Jhargram sub-division including Lalgarh, Salboni and Goaltor of West Midnapore district; Ranibandh, Simlapal, Sarenga and Khatra areas of Bankura; and Bandwan, Baghmundi, Balarampur and Barabazar blocks of Purulia district.

Though schools, colleges and offices were closed as it is Sunday, shops and markets remained shut and vehicles were off the road, the officials said.

Mahato had said he sought moral support and cooperation of Left Front partners RSP and Forward Bloc to make the bandh a success.

LALGARH: Both the People’s Committee against Police Atrocities (PCPA) and the Maoists have called bandhs one after the other.

While the Maoist-backed PCPA has given a call for a 72-hour bandh in West Midnapore, Bankura and Purulia districts from Sunday to protest the month-long operation and torture of innocent villagers at its core committee meeting near Lalgarh on Friday, CPI(Maoist) has called a bandh on July 22, immediately after this strike ends in Bihar, Jharkhand, Orissa and Bengal in protest against the price hike of petrol, potato and essential commodities.
