Chhattisgarh cop held for setting woman on fire

Posted by Admin on July 31, 2009

RAIPUR – A member of the Chhattisgarh Armed Forces (CAF) has been arrested for setting a woman on fire after she refused to provide him liquor, police said Friday. The woman is battling for life.

The incident took place late Thursday in Surguja district, some 350 km from here. The woman is warded in a government hospital with 90 percent burn injuries.

The policeman, Ambuj Shukla, asked Sushila Paswan, a 38-year-old widow of Ramanujganj area, to get home-made liquor for him. He got upset when she refused.

He allegedly chased the lady into her kitchen, poured kerosene oil on her and set her ablaze, A.K. Kujur, an officer investigating the case, told IANS on telephone.

The woman was first taken to a primary health centre and then referred to the government hospital at Ambikapur, headquarters of Surguja district.

Police arrested Shukla Thursday night and charged him with attempt to murder under Section 307 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Lalgarh: Cops use Press stickers to evade Maoists

Posted by Admin on July 23, 2009

ev_naxal3DHARAMPUR: The stress of the battle for Lalgarh is proving to be too much for a section of police officers posted there. Desperate to avoid a Maoist strike, they are using everything from vehicles with Press stickers to ambulances to move around the forested terrain.

For example, during the Maoist-sponsored bandh on Wednesday, police supplied food and essential items to the Dharampur and Gohamidanga police camps in an ambulance. “Some officers are using Press and other stickers like patient’, LIC’ and BSNL’. This is increasing the risk for vehicles sporting authentic stickers,” said a constable. “Some senior officers have gathered stacks of these stickers and are using them after removing the police tag from vehicles. There are at least 12 four-wheelers with such stickers. They are even changing number plates to prevent identification.” Read the rest of this entry »
