Maoists seek to push link-up plan

Posted by Admin on July 31, 2009

Activities of Maoists in ChhattisgarhRAIPUR: The sudden surge in Maoist attacks on security forces in Chhattisgarh in the last three months points to the implementation of a plan to link up the areas under their control in adjoining Orissa, Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh, with their base in the Bastar forests of Chhattisgarh.

In addition to a rash of incidents targeting security forces, the increased movement of rebels in areas so far relatively peaceful has been causing concern to the Chhattisgarh government.

In four attacks in the last three months, as many as 67 personnel were killed in Jagdalpur, Dhamtari, Rajnandgaon and Dantewara districts. The death roll has even surpassed casualty figures of security forces in the North East and Kashmir, police officers say.

The spatial spread of the attacks shows that the Maoists have put in place mechanisms to spread their control beyond Abuz Maad in Bastar, and to link up their struggle areas in the neighbouring States. The rebels, however, have been unsuccessful in inching their way into Andhra Pradesh.

The latest offensive is also aimed at dousing any ardour of the para-military forces and Chhattisgarh police for taking up counter-insurgency operations. Read the rest of this entry »

Chhattisgarh: New Military base in Raipur sets stage for help to fight Maoists

Posted by Admin on July 31, 2009

PWG_ABPWith Defence Minister A K Antony giving the green signal for a new Army brigade headquarters in Raipur in Naxalite-hit Chhattisgarh, the stage is being set for the military, particularly the Rashtriya Rifles (RR), to join counter-Naxalite operations.

Raised in 1990 to fight counter-insurgency in Kashmir, the 80,000-strong RR has been operating on a temporary mandate under the Indian Army. Before this mandate expires in September, the Ministry of Defence is moving the CCS to allow RR to be deployed nationwide for counter-insurgency operations. A key step towards this came last week with Home Minister P Chidambaram’s nod allowing a permanent mandate for the RR.

The establishment of a sub-area command in Raipur and a manoeuvering range at Bilaspur — along with a training facility for Special Forces — means that troops will be stationed in Chhattisgarh as part of “confidence-building” operations. Read the rest of this entry »

Maoist landmine kills two troopers in Chhattisgarh

Posted by Admin on July 27, 2009

RAIPUR - Two troopers were killed and four injured late Sunday when Maoist guerrillas ambushed two paramilitary vehicles and triggered a powerful landmine blast in Chhattisgarh’s restive Bastar region, police said. Over two dozen Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) troopers were in the vehicles when a landmine hit one of them and damaged its front portion in Dantewada district, some 350 km south of capital Raipur, said Deputy Inspector General Pawan Deo. Six injured CRPF men were rushed to a hospital in Dantewada where two of them succumbed to their injuries, he said. “The blast was targeted for a massive casualty but it hit only one vehicle. The troopers in the (other) vehicle fired on heavily armed guerrillas who countered the CRPF men for a while before disappearing into nearby forests under cover of darkness,” Deo told IANS. Police officials at Dantewada town said reinforcement of about 80-100 CRPF men besides a strong contingent of state police had reached the site. But a combing operation has been deferred till Monday morning as police suspect Maoists can ambush them if they sneak into forests in night. Forces have been put on high alert in the entire Dantewada district that has witnessed a string of deadly attacks in recent years. Blog Tharanga
