Maoist nabbed from tribal colony at Pulpally in Wayanad

KOZHIKODE: The police have arrested Sinoj alias Ramesan, 32, an activist of the Revolutionary Peoples Front (RPF), a frontal organisation of the CPI (Maoist), from the Chekadi colony at Pulpally in Wayanad on Sunday.

The police also recovered three propaganda CDs, a booklet on Lalgarh and some literature related to Maoists in Nepal. Sinoj was produced in the Judicial First Class Magistrate’s court, Sulthan Batheri, which remanded him in judicial custody.

Sinoj, who hails from Talikkulam in Thrissur district, was picked up by the police from a tribal colony following a tip-off. The colony was under police watch for sometime following information that Maoists were ‘concentrating’ on the area.

RPF was formed in Kerala in 2007 as the state unit of the Revolutionary Democratic Front (RDF), a Delhi-based outfit who profess to campaign against forcible displacements and human rights violations. Poet-activist from Andhra Pradesh Varavara Rao is RDF’s president, its other leaders being G N Saibaba, Raj Kishore and Darshanpal.

RPF organised a meeting in Kollam in June 2008 in memory of CPI (Maoist) central committee member Sende Raja Mouli who, according to it, was picked up from Kollam and later killed in an ‘encounter’. The police claim Sinoj was conducting study classes among tribals on armed uprising ‘after Maoist activities were intensified in the recent past among Wayanad tribals’. But the RPF leadership says Sinoj was in Wayanad to collect signatures for a campaign against the police and CPM ‘atrocities’ in Lalgarh in West Bengal. “This is the latest example of the CPM’s social fascism. It wants to suppress all voices against police brutality in Lalgarh,” said Ajayan Manur, RPF state secretary, in a release on Monday.

Human rights activists have denounced the arrest. Meanwhile, RPF and Porattam, another Maoist outift, have formed a committee to protest against the global investor meet to be held in Kochi on July 24.

“The police want to ensure a smooth sail for the meet. Hence the arrest and intimidations,” said Ajayan
